How to Land a Senior Principal Product Manager Role at Spotify

    The Opportunity

Spotify is looking for a Senior Principal Product Manager. The hiring manager posted directly on LinkedIn. Here is the direct link to the hiring manager referral and contact info: Spotify Senior Principal PM — LinkedIn Post

    A Note on Location

The position is listed for London or Stockholm — but understand that the challenges Spotify faces are beyond national borders.

There are also product manager openings at Apple Music and YouTube Music posted at the same time, by the actual hiring managers. They would both appreciate your due diligence and your competitive market research.

Operate with intention and build out the projects for Spotify as well. If you have real-world feedback and the team feels you can deliver better results than the current product management team, they are not really going to care what city you operate from — because Spotify is everywhere.

What Spotify Is Actually Hiring For

Based on a detailed analysis of the job description, Spotify is not hiring a generic senior PM. They are hiring someone who can operate at the intersection of product strategy, creator economics, and platform scalability — someone who can zoom out to the business model and zoom in to a specific user pain point in the same conversation.

At the Senior Principal level, Spotify expects you to be a force multiplier for the teams around you. You are not just shipping features; you are shaping how Spotify thinks about problems. That means your portfolio needs to demonstrate strategic thinking, not just execution.

The 5 Product Gaps Your Portfolio Must Address

    • Creator Monetization Gaps: Independent artists on Spotify earn fractions of a cent per stream. The platform has introduced Spotify for Artists and Discovery Mode, but creator-side monetization tools are still primitive compared to what YouTube offers creators. A Senior Principal PM who can drive a step-change here would be immediately valuable.
    • Discovery Engine Limits: Spotify's recommendation system is the best in the industry — but it over-indexes on listening history and under-indexes on context (mood, activity, time of day) in ways that create real user frustration. Personalization at the level of "what do I need right now" is still largely unsolved.
    • Podcast-Music Integration: Spotify made a major bet on podcasts. The integration between the music and podcast experiences is still largely surface-level. A PM who can think about how audio experiences compound — how a music listener becomes a podcast listener becomes a subscriber — would be solving a real strategic problem.
    • Social and Community Features: Spotify killed its social features years ago and has been slowly rebuilding them. Blend and Collaborative Playlists are good starts, but the social listening experience still lags behind what fans actually want, especially for live events and artist launches.
    • Superfan Monetization: Spotify launched Superfan Club in beta. The infrastructure for fans to go deeper with the artists they love — beyond streaming, into merchandise, ticketing, exclusive content, early access — is early and fragmented. A PM who can accelerate this is working on one of Spotify's most important long-term bets.

Project 1: The Creator Monetization Teardown

Goal: Build a comprehensive teardown of Spotify's creator monetization tools compared to YouTube Music, Apple Music, and emerging alternatives — and identify the highest-leverage gap.

    What to build:

    • User interviews with 5–8 independent artists or music managers about how they currently monetize on Spotify vs. other platforms
    • A competitive feature matrix: Spotify for Artists vs. YouTube Studio vs. Apple Music for Artists vs. Bandcamp
    • A gap analysis identifying the 3 most painful monetization failures for independent artists on Spotify
    • A proposed feature or program addressing the highest-priority gap, with a go-to-market rationale and success metrics

Why this lands: Creator monetization is one of Spotify's most visible strategic vulnerabilities. A candidate who arrives with primary research and a concrete proposal is doing the job before they have the job.

Project 2: Contextual Discovery Prototype — Beyond Listening History

Goal: Design and test a prototype of a Spotify discovery feature that uses contextual signals — time of day, recent activity, calendar, weather — rather than purely listening history.

    What to build:

    • A prototype of a contextual discovery surface built in Figma or Lovable
    • User testing with 5–8 Spotify users walking through the prototype and providing feedback
    • A comparison of the contextual recommendation experience against a standard Spotify "Discover Weekly" or "Daily Mix" session
    • A metrics framework: discovery acceptance rate, skip rate, save rate, return listening

Why this lands: Spotify's recommendation engine is well-known. What is less well-known is where it fails. A candidate who can demonstrate both where the failure is and what a better version looks like — with real user feedback — is operating at Senior Principal PM level before the interview starts.

Project 3: Superfan Monetization — Mapping the Path from Streamer to Superfan

Goal: Map the current Superfan Club experience, identify the biggest gaps in the superfan journey, and prototype one improvement.

    What to build:

    • A journey map of a Spotify superfan: from discovering an artist, to following them, to engaging with exclusive content, to a potential purchase or live event
    • User interviews with 5–8 self-identified Spotify superfans about what they wish they could do on the platform that they currently cannot
    • A proposed feature addition to the Superfan Club experience, with a prototype and user test
    • A business case: what does superfan monetization unlock for Spotify's LTV model?

Why this lands: Superfan Club is one of Spotify's highest-priority new bets. Arriving with a user-tested prototype of an improvement to a product they are actively building is the strongest possible signal.

    Your Build Order

Move quickly. This can be done in a week with focused effort.

    • Day 1: Recruit research participants — artists, music managers, and Spotify superfans.
    • Day 2–3: Run user interviews for Projects 1 and 3.
    • Day 4–5: Build your Project 2 contextual discovery prototype.
    • Day 6: Run user testing sessions for Project 2.
    • Day 7: Synthesize findings, write your portfolio narrative, record your walkthrough video.

    Final Takeaways

What hiring teams are going to be looking for all across the industry are not only product manager candidates who can move quickly, but who have also gathered real customer feedback. Successful products are built with the customer in mind.

Complete this assignment as a group, build publicly, and validate with real data. Any product team that decides to overlook a candidate who has done that work would be remiss. In which case, do not hesitate to reach out directly to the CEO.

The approach we are taking is very similar to how startups pitch VCs. And if you have been following this series, the Apple Music and YouTube Music portfolio work you have already done is directly transferable here. Build all three. Show the comparative analysis. That is the move.
